The proclamation of the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0, could be interpreted as a symptom of our rapidly changing times, which in a way are already anticipating their own history. The first three industrial revolutions only received their names and their historical context in retrospect. The proclamation of Industry 4.0 by the German federal government and the German industry is however based on the conclusion that the real and digital economies are merging. Moreover, it includes the wish that it should merge in a controlled and orderly manner. The key question at this stage is if and how this can succeed.
 

What happened so far?

The first revolution took place in the 18th century with mechanical production using steam engines. The second revolution came in the 19th century with electrified mass production. The third revolution took place in the 20th ...
