Why should anyone invest in machine translation (MT)? It’s simply a matter of numbers. Really big numbers. Most organizations create enormous volumes of content, but they budget far too little to translate it – or even a tiny fraction of it.

As a result, translation strategies that rely on human output alone have already been overwhelmed by the explosion in content. The problem will only get worse as organizations push to rapidly enter new markets. If companies and governments are going to meet the needs of their many users around the world, they will have to evaluate how to integrate MT into their global content strategies – regardless of the type or size of their organization. What translation automation tools do is increase both the quantity and pace of words rendered into other languages. Too often machine translation advocates claim big multipliers in productivity, but they typically focus on replacing work done by human translators rather than scope out the work to translate the massive amounts of content that will never be touched by human hands.
