Procedural model for creating technical documentation

Technical communication and mediation, which is a process of resolving conflicts, have nothing to do with each other. Or so it appears at first glance. However, mediation is the basic underlying principle that is applied to the creation of instruction or user manuals. It makes the individual work steps clearer, and hence easier to track. This is a procedure which helps all professionals in the field, not just beginners, get through their day-to-day work much better.

From ALPHA to ALASKA*

Mediation is a process that consists of five consecutive steps:

A All about the order
L List of topics to be discussed
P Peek at the underlying interests behind the various list items
H Eureka (found new solution)
A Agreement in the end

The process of creating technical documentation follows a similar pattern. The ALASKA model, which consists of six phases, has been derived based on the ALPHA [1]:
