What are the culture-specific characteristics of the Japanese workforce?

It is difficult to generalize as we are speaking about a workforce of tens of millions of workers. My own personal experience obviously represent only a small sample of the local workforce.

Some values might not be too different from Western ones, however, there might be a different understanding of these values or priorities.

Customer satisfaction is a good example: While the entire world speaks about it – the Japanese truly “walk the talk”. In the Japanese culture, customer focus seems to be instilled into the people from early on. It does not matter if you go to a big department store in Ginza (where staff go through a tough and enduring training on how to bow, smile, answer questions etc.) or if you are just having a meal in a local eatery where the staff are mainly students who improve their pocket-money via ...
