Video guide
This guide is designed to help you record high-quality videos using your smartphone. In the following sections, you'll find a detailed breakdown of all the steps you need to consider.
Preparation
- Charge your phone.
- Check if there is enough storage space available.
- Clean the camera lens with a microfiber cloth.
Optimizing image quality
- Select a resolution of at least 1080p, preferably 4K (if available).
- Set the frame rate to 30 fps.
- Enable HDR if your device supports it.
- Use Cinematic Mode if your device supports it.
Stability
- Use a tripod or a stable surface.
- Alternatively, hold the phone steady with both hands. You can rest your elbows against your body for more stability.
Lighting
- Choose a location with as much natural light as possible (e.g., near a window).
- If you need an additional light source, place it in front of you.
- For indoor recording, consider using an extra light source (e.g., softbox or ring light).
Sound quality
- If possible, use an external microphone (e.g., a lavalier mic or a directional mic).
- Alternatively, choose a quiet environment and speak close to the phone's microphone.
- If available, activate a microphone level meter.
This meter should never peak above 0 dBA, as the audio signal may otherwise become distorted.
Orientation
- Use landscape mode if you’re recording a video for YouTube or presentations.
Background & framing
- Choose a calm, uncluttered background.
- Position yourself so that your eyes align with the upper third of the frame (“rule of thirds”).
- Ensure there is enough distance from the camera. Your head should not be cut off in the frame.
Recording
- Record a short test clip to check image and sound quality.
- Activate airplane mode to avoid interruptions.
- Don’t use the zoom function while recording. Instead, move closer to the camera.
