Most people think of Iceland as the small island between Europe and the American continent, full of wild nature and ice. What many people don’t know is that Iceland has a very strong and rich economy and is a special market also from a linguistic point of view.

The language side of Iceland

To start with, let me give you some basic yet important information about this country: Geographically speaking Iceland belongs to Scandinavia. As I will elaborate later, the Icelandic language has linguistic roots in the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian languages. So, what kind of country and economy are we looking at?

A nation with an astonishing growth

Iceland has a population of only 300.000 inhabitants. Its economy is growth driven and enjoys one of the highest GDP per capita. In terms of competitiveness Iceland ranks number four in Europe according to the “IMD's World Competitiveness Yearbook 2007”.

The local economy is particularly interesting because of the large foreign investments by Icelandic companies. In addition, Icelandic companies – grown out of a labor market of 170.000 people – now employ over 100.000 additional people in 14 countries worldwide.
