Microsoft Help Viewer V1.0 - a new Help format?

Not much was heard about the development of a new Help compiler by Microsoft for a long time - except denials. But something seems to be happening since 2009. There is talk of a new Help format in the Help community: HTML Help V3. Since the beginning of this year, the new format is called Microsoft Help Viewer V1.0. It was officially introduced in April 2010, with the release of version 2010 of Visual Studio.

Microsoft Help Viewer V1.0 - a new Help format?

icrosoft made two attempts to develop a new Help format. According to independent software manufacturers, both the attempts have failed:
 

  • HTML V2: a proprietary Help format specifically for Visual Studio .Net developers; it was originally intended to replace the proprietary HTML Help (.chm). But due to the proprietary approach, HTML V2 could not establish itself as a common Help format.
  • Longhorn/Vista Help: also a proprietary Help format for applications that should run on the then new operating system. Vista Help was used by Microsoft only to document their own applications. The release for all software manufacturers was delayed several times and finally called off in 2007. At that time, Help authors pointed Microsoft to the chm format that would surely remain the current Help format for a few more years.
