Video guide

This guide is designed to help you record high-quality videos using your smartphone. In the following sections, you'll find a detailed breakdown of all the steps you need to consider.

Preparation

  1. Charge your phone.
  2. Check if there is enough storage space available.
  3. Clean the camera lens with a microfiber cloth.

Optimizing image quality

  1. Select a resolution of at least 1080p, preferably 4K (if available).
  2. Set the frame rate to 30 fps.
  3. Enable HDR if your device supports it.
  4. Use Cinematic Mode if your device supports it.

Stability

  1. Use a tripod or a stable surface.
  2. Alternatively, hold the phone steady with both hands. You can rest your elbows against your body for more stability.

Lighting

  1. Choose a location with as much natural light as possible (e.g., near a window).
  2. If you need an additional light source, place it in front of you.
  3. For indoor recording, consider using an extra light source (e.g., softbox or ring light).

Sound quality

  1. If possible, use an external microphone (e.g., a lavalier mic or a directional mic).
  2. Alternatively, choose a quiet environment and speak close to the phone's microphone.
  3. If available, activate a microphone level meter.
This meter should never peak above 0 dBA, as the audio signal may otherwise become distorted.

Orientation

  1. Use landscape mode if you’re recording a video for YouTube or presentations.

Background & framing

  1. Choose a calm, uncluttered background.
  2. Position yourself so that your eyes align with the upper third of the frame (“rule of thirds”).
  3. Ensure there is enough distance from the camera. Your head should not be cut off in the frame.

Recording

  1. Record a short test clip to check image and sound quality.
  2. Activate airplane mode to avoid interruptions.
  3. Don’t use the zoom function while recording. Instead, move closer to the camera.
